Carl G. Jung suggested the existence of a collective unconscious. Myths would be the dreams of a whole society: the collective desire of a society that rose from the collective unconscious. The same kinds of characters seem to appear in personal as well as in collective dreams. These characters are human archetypes. Impressively, these archetypes appear repeatedly all along History, in the most varied cultures, as well as in the personalities of the individuals and in the myths all around the world.

Language is a product of intellect and rationality, but the archetypes go beyond intellect and rationality. Consequently, they generally express themselves more directly through symbols, for symbols do not appeal only to the intellectual mind, but to the deepest levels of the psyche.
